easterEaster.  A holiday that has different memories for many of us.  Whether it’s a day of Easter egg hunting, attending church, Easter baskets for the kids, spending time with family, or avoiding the holiday completely and taking a drive to the beach, we all have experienced something on this day that is memorable.

While growing up our family always went to church on Easter and it always meant a new dress, nice white shoes, an Easter bonnet, and sometimes, white gloves.

Now my family was far from rich so my wonderfully talented mother would buy enough material to make dresses for the 3 girls and a matching shirt for my brother.  I remember one particular Easter when the material she picked out was a light pink and white check cotton.  A good choice for the girls, but that was before the slogan “real men/boys wear pink” was thought of and my brother was far from buff!  The pattern mom picked out for the dresses was very simple and consisted of short-sleeves, fitted bodice and a gathered skirt.  My brother’s shirt was short-sleeved, button-up, collared with a small front pocket.  This year in addition to making the dresses, she also made the girls knee-length coats made of white pique material.  My dad always loved making an entrance into church and let me tell you, all heads turned as the Blake family walked down the aisle!

Although it took my mother several hours to make our Easter outfits, there was just no way that she could afford to purchase new outfits for all of us kids and Easter was one holiday that we always got a new dress. Even though my mom was very frugal and wise with the money, most of the time after buying the material, shoes and bonnets, there was not enough left over for her to wear a new dress.  So on Easter she would go through her dresses, examining each for that special spring quality, before her final decision was made.  Regardless of what she wore, she looked beautiful, especially if you looked into her heart
