Mother’s Day — A Tribute to my Moms

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching and this will be the third year that my mom has been gone and I continue to miss her daily.  My other mom (my mother-in-law) has been gone far longer but I still have wonderful memories of her, as well.  I feel blessed to have had two moms who were kind, caring, giving and wonderful individuals who gave to their families, friends, church and their community.  As much as they were alike, their lives were very different.

I have three siblings, two sisters and a brother, and my mom was a homemaker.  My father was often gone, holding down at least two jobs most of his adult life. My mom was a great seamstress (as I wrote in my Easter post), and was a wonderful cook and could bake a scrumptious German chocolate cake, from scratch!  In mom’s last 20 years she was a quilter, and made beautiful, intricate quilts for all family members and close friends.  During this time she also made countless quilts that she donated to Planned Parenthood, Homeless shelters, and Veterans’ survivors.  She was an incredible person who always thought of others before herself.

My husband comes from a family of five boys and a girl, and although my mother-in-law started out as a homemaker, she was forced to work outside the home when her husband was involved in a serious accident.  She survived on less than 5 hours of sleep a night, worked an 8+ hour a day job, attended the boys’ sporting activities and still had a full-time job taking care of her husband and children’s needs once she was home from work.  My nickname for her over the years has been  “Saint Trudy” as I felt she was the closest thing to a Saint as there could ever be.

There are things I wish I would have said to my moms before they suddenly departed.   So on this Mother’s Day, if your mother is still alive, take time to tell her how much you love her and how important she is in your life
