woman sitting with shopping bagsI love to clothes shop!  For me it’s one of the most therapeutic things I can do to help me de-stress.  When I was teaching full-time, I would look forward to my Saturday outings.  I usually followed a routine as to when I would leave home, shop, eat frozen yogurt for lunch, and then finish my shopping.  Even though it was an hour drive to get to the destination, my anticipation of finding just the right deal or the perfect piece of clothing grew with each mile I drove

I would go to New York and Company at the mall, my favorite clothing store…this was almost always my first stop.  With coupons in hand, I would enter the store with excitement and was always greeted by friendly personnel.  I would meander around the store, picking up clothes to try on, go to the dressing room, ooh and ahh or nix the outfit/clothes, redress, and make one more sweep of the store for other sizes, color combinations or just make sure I hadn’t missed something the first time around.  I almost always went home with a bag full of beautiful clothes, matching accessories, a smile on my face and a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment.

When Kelly was hired as the NY&CO store manager, I enjoyed my weekly venture even more as I looked forward to our discussions, usually about education, politics and kids, and knew that my stay at the store could last well over an hour.  Kelly knew my size and the colors I gravitated toward and would always show me clothes that she thought would be perfect “teacher wear”.  Over the years I met her family, went through the pregnancy of her precious daughter and saw Kelly’s hair change many colors and styles.  Kelly always made sure that I got the best discount I could on my purchases and, from what I could see, was a great store manager.

As time went on, Kelly pursued another career and I moved to another state.   I’ve only been to a couple other NY&CO stores in the past year, and although they offer beautiful, practical clothes and I still receive store coupons, my purchases have been limited.  I have come to realize that my shopping trips to my favorite store was not only for a great buy but for the relationship I had developed with Kelly and her staff.  To take a look at Kelly and myself, you would think we had little  in common.  I’m old enough to be her mom, her daughter and my granddaughter are the same age, and her hair and makeup are pretty edgy whereas mine is very practical and predictable.  I’m so glad that she looked past the visible differences between us and searched out the commonalities we both shared.

I miss those shopping days but my clothing needs have changed drastically since retiring.  I still shop occasionally but I don’t come home with bags of clothes like I once did.  Whenever I am out shopping and come across a NY&CO, I can’t help but think how thankful I am that our two paths crossed some five years ago and a special friendship developed between two unlikely individuals.  Thanks Kelly.

Until next time,

Judy
